Picture book for grown-ups
For this one, I chose Blacksad, Vol. 1 - Juan Díaz Canales,Juanjo Guarnido . It is hard-boild crime noir. Just like you'd see in an old-fashioned film noir except with real sex and the authors use animal kingdom cognates for people. Blacksad is a dog, the femme fatales are very sex-kitten cats. The underworld types are rendered as bulldogs, lizards, snakes etc. But only the heads. The bodies are human. Sounds weird, but looks really, well... natural.
The storytelling is pure James M. Cain or Raymond Chandler.
The pictures are gorgeous.
